bio
Abimael Pagán, known as Coach Abi, brings over 20 years of volleyball experience to his role as founder and Club Director of Borinquen Volleyball Academy (BVA). He has served as Head Coach for BVA teams ranging from 15U to 17U and as a volleyball instructor with Charles County Parks and Recreation since 2023. He also served as Varsity Coach at Maurice J. McDonough High School during the 2024 fall season.
Originally from Puerto Rico, Coach Abi received volleyball scholarships from seventh grade through his senior year at La Milagrosa in Cayey. From 2008 to 2012, he played outside hitter and right-side hitter for Borinquen Coqui Club. He continued his volleyball journey on scholarship at Universidad Politécnica in San Juan, where he also competed as an outside hitter and right-side hitter at the collegiate level. During his playing career, he earned Best Defensive Player, Best Offensive Player, and Rookie of the Year honors. He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Aerospace and now serves as a Mechanical Engineer supporting the Navy, working with fighter jet pilot ejection seats to help ensure fleet safety.
Coach Abi’s decision to coach stems from a lifelong passion for volleyball and the inspiration of his coaches in Puerto Rico. His greatest joy is helping athletes develop their skills, overcome challenges, and accomplish things they once believed were beyond their reach—both on and off the court. Through BVA and his community work, he strives to expand scholarship opportunities and develop coaches who can positively shape the next generation.
Outside of volleyball, Coach Abi is a proud sports dad of three children. He shares his life with his wife, and enjoys outdoor activities, working in his garden, and caring for animals.
